I can't install my scanner.

I need help installing my stupid scannner. The scanner is on, it's cable is connected to the computer, all of it's programs are installed and running, yet the computter still doesn't recognize it. help, plz?

Need more information. What brand and type scanner? Is it USB? If USB, switch USB ports.
What operating system? Some older scanners do not work when a person upgrades to Winxp. mirse@aol.com

Oops, I hadn't noticed this had been replied.
Well the scanner is an old Microtek Slimscan C3. The scanner uses one of those old pin connectors to connect with the printer, but it uses USB to jack in with the computer.
I am running WinXP, so what you said is a possible answer. Is there anyway to save it from extrinction, or am I doomed to buy a new one?
