Problem getting a NON bitmap background.
I cannot figure how to fix it...HELP!! please.

I right click desktop,
click properties,
click DESKTOP tab.

If I choose a bitmap image, it changes OK.
If I choose a JPG image etc from the list, I get an ERROR MESSAGE.

--
Error Message:

Run a DLL as an App has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.
--
Then clicking the 'more info' link, I get a message:

--
Error Signature
AppName: rundll32.exe AppVer: 5.1.2600.0ModName: mshtml.dll
ModVer: 6.0.2800.1106 Offset: 001a0347

Any help to this would be much appreciated

I too have been having this problem, and have spent hours searching for a solution, but remain unsuccessful. I believe replacing "rundll32.exe" may assist, I have reason to believe it is corrupted/infected.

I thought I was alone in this. But my problem is slightly different, and just happened today. I was able to have ANY picture format as a background (jpg, gif, bmp, png, etc), but then I wrote a cool script about a month and a half ago that cycles my background pictures on a timer. I had them in an array, and when my array grew to over 1400 cells, that's when I get the errors you guys get. Not only that, I can't have anything other than a bitmap as a background, and explorer crashes if I try to 1) open the script, 2) put any other picture format as a background, and 3) if I stayed too long in the folder that had all my pictures. Because of this I had to burn all my pics to a CD. I'm looking for answers as we speak. If I find anything I'll post it or email. Please do the same if you come up with something. If not, I'll just run a recovery on XP and see what that does.

Best of luck to you all!

I too am getting the DLL as an App problem, except this only happens on my PC (windows XP) when I try to delete my temporary internet files...

I do not know if these things are related or not, however the way I figure it is if you can fix one you can fix another.

Dowload Ad-ware 6 and run the update, Then start to scan you pc. It is spyware causing this problem !
I;ve had the same, it is caused by some registry keys !

Good luck

hmm. I'm running WinXP Pro SP1. I had the same problem. Ran adaware 6. It found only 1 reg key to do with "Alexa" (a search engine thingy like google toolbar). Removed it anyway. Made no difference.

OOPS. Didn't read the bit "run the update". In the personal addition you need to "check for updates". Then it works!! It was the "TKMSoft Xplugin" in my case.

yup Ad-ware 6 works but u have to d/l the updates. and as an added precaution i suggest you run chkdsk /f for the next reboot, and also get spyware blaster to keep the spyware from coming back.

Alright, I've looked around on the net for some answers and I can't really find any, so I'll ask you people.

This is what happens:
1. I Right Click on my Desktop
2. I select Properties
3. I select Desktop from the menu

The window closes unceremoniously, and I get this message:

"Run a DLL as an App has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvience."

Does anyone have any solution for this? I ran Ad-Aware and stuff but nothing was solved, and I even thought about replacing
rundll32.dll, seeing as how it was the dll that was messing up, but I didn't want to mess up my comp accidently.

I was having the same damn problem, but I tried Ad-Ware 6.0 Professional did the updates and my Ad-ware still didn't catch it. So I just decided to try another ad-remover program called "Spybot - Search & Destroy" you can download that program run the updates and then search for it. This program found about 40 more ads and items that were on my computer and the AD-WARE didn't find it. The SpyBot is FREE so you can download it probably at http://www.download.com

It worked for me hope it works 4 u

I had similar problem with explorer.exe when I tried to open html file from My Documents folder. Updated Adaware and it found TMK... sumthing regkeys and helped. Thanz a bunch!

Why ad-aware isn't working on "running your dll"
When running ad-aware to fix this problem, not only do you have to update your ad aware, but you should also choose custom scanning options, and make it scan everything.

I'm having the same prob. everybody!! I've searched my entire hard drive, xplugin is nowhere to be found. I just recently moved back home, and don't have an i-net connection to my comp. in my room yet, so I haven't been able to try ad-ware yet. Re-formatting, however, did not solve the issue. I'll keep you all posted.

I was having the same problem as everyone else...ran all the scanners, nothing worked. Then I found xplugin.dll in my C:\Windows\System32 folder and renamed it. I no longer get the error. Remember to set it so you can view hidden files because xplugin.dll is hidden by default. Hope this helps.

Thanx DW! For those of you that still don't know exactly what to do and are still downloading software: Do this exactly. 1. Go to My Computer 2. Then on the TOOLS tab go down to folder options. 3. Go to the VIEW tab. 4. Where it says Hidden files and folders click on the bubble next to Show Hidden Files and Folders, Press OK. 5. Click on Local Disk (C:). 6. Go to the WINDOWS tab. 7. Find the SYSTEM32 folder (NOT THE SYSTEM) folder. 8. You're going to have to scroll all the way down till you find a file named (xplugin.dll) , right click on the file and choose RENAME. 9. Rename the file to (zzxplugin.dll), click somewhere else on the screen and close. That should do the trick! Once again, thanx DW!

02/08/04
xplugin.dll
You don't want xplugin.dll

A file xplugin.dll is installed, which creates a new protocol filter for text/html. In normal english, this means it reads most of the web pages downloaded to your browser. It also randomly alters some links in Google search results to pages on umaxsearch.com and Coolwebsearch.com. It claims to be made by something called TMKSoft.

Norton calls it Adware.TMKSoft.XPlugin

Adware means you need expanded threats to detect it.

CW-shredder will get rid of it.
