ERROR: Operating System Not Found On Boot

ISSUE: ERROR: "Operating System not found..." on boot.

OS AFFECTED: Any & All

CAUSE:
System is NOT Ready Yet
When you boot up your computer power is distributed to all of the devices. As soon as the BIOS is set into motion it begins checking for all of the necessary items it needs to boot up. Meanwhile while the hard drive is spinning up and those platters on the inside of the drive are revving up to their maximum RPM the BIOS is requesting the drive begin loading the operating system. Because the hard drive has not had enough time to rev up, the hard drive has no choice but to tell the BIOS "sorry, no O/S today…"

If the client reboots properly they should boot into Windows on the next attempt or so. If the client reboots improperly, i.e. hitting the power button, then it may happen a few more times and eventually get enough rev speed to load in.

RESOLUTION:
BIOS / Main Section / IDE Options or Boot Options

Hard Disk Pre-Delay Should be set to 6seconds or Higher.

By setting the hard disk pre delay higher you are actually telling the BIOS to wait a little bit before it requests the O/S to begin loading. A good analogy is ; the carpool coming by to pick you up, but you are not ready yet. So, they leave without you.

You may also wish to mention that "Operating System Not Found" usually means the Hard Drive is not being seen, not a definite reformat.

What if you get that message one day without having done anything different than usual?
I recently replaced a friends damaged hard disk drive with a new one. After I formatted the drive and installed windows 98 as well as all the necessary drivers, I kept it home for a couple of days to see if everything was okay. After that, I took it back to him, set it up and I left him surfing the www, something I did too when I had it at home. The next day or two days after he called me and said there is a problem: “when I switch on the PC it shows a message saying ‘Operating system not found’.”
I went there to see what’s happening as I’ve never encountered that message before. I checked the BIOS first, but everything was in order. I used the startup disk to boot the PC and I found out that MS-DOS was not aware of a hard drive existence. I tried to run fdisk but it was terminated producing an error message. Now, after a few things I tried it seems that even BIOS does not identify the drive.
P.S. I also tried the hard disk pre-delay.
Any ideas?
