Hello Ed! If it's you that will help me again. I asked previously for a recovery disc. you stated to use spybot. it worked but it stops responding at a point and the file it stops at is called C2.lop. I checked the settings out and found out that it's some kind of virus. Anyways, every time I start my computer, everything that spybot had fixed is back. After 10 minutes or so, the comp slows down dramatically. I have no more error messages! Is there something better than spybot? Thanx in advance...Trevor

nothings better than spybot,
You have to bear in mind that if you have things like kazza that install spyware in the system then they will try to reinstall also. Go to grisoft.com and download avg anti virus and update it. Its free and very very good.
Press start/ run and type msconfig go to start up tab and write down for me what is checked off. The things that are checked off are things that start up with windows.
It may be that you have spybot's setting to not include registry entries and so when you restart your computer the registry entry is still there. Don't change anything in msconfig just yet though. Post back trevor

spybot search & destroy: part 2
Hello Ed! I checked msconfig. It's all checked. I'm trying to download the avg but after 30 minutes or so, it nearly goes dead, the comp that is. So I'm trying again. I'll post back as soon as I can...

I've got avg, got updates, checked for virus, none detected... computer is slower than usual, I've defraged and cleared my cache. Yet, spybot still stops responding at c2.lop... I can only get around it when i choose the 2 files of c2.lop under the exclude tab for spybot... any more sugestions?

How long have you let spybot sit there on C2.lop, cause mine does it also, i just let it sit there and eventually it does go and remove it. Ideally, you should be running in a clean boot when trying to run spybot.
to do so click on start, then run, then msconfig and uncheck everything BUT "Load System Services"

From the Spybot website:
"Why does the scan hang during detection of C2.lop? link FAQ #022
The exact reason isn't yet known, as this error seems to be sporadic and only on a few machines, but there's a simple way around it. Start Spybot-S&D in advanced mode, open the Excludes section, and select C2.lop for exclusion of the scan (tick the checkbox in front of the C2.lop entry). This will avoid scan of C2.lop until a bugfix comes out (soon).
Update (May 7th): the reason for this hang is a corrupted file, located either in the Temp or in the Application Data folder. There is an update available that can deal with this problem; if you check for updates, be sure to download the one named File check library. Or download the manual updater if you don't want to use the update function."

OK, here's another problem, spybot hangs and stops responding during update as well... and skaught, i have let it sit there for 10 min, then 20, then 30, and when I do eventually get sick of waiting, i alt;ctrl;del and it states that it's not responding. the comp is awfully slower than usual, but better than las week. I have win 98 with all updates from msn. Under msconfig start up i have checked:
msnmsgr, scanregistry, taskmonitor, oemcleanup,
systemtray, soundfusion, loadqm, pointer, icqlite, loadpowerprofile, avg_cc,
tvwakeup, vidsvr, announcements, loadpowerprofile, avgserv9.exe

I should have mentioned that the slowness of the comp is also slow when you type. the cursor moves and until you stop typing, you don't see the words.

well you dont have too much in startup which is good but you dont need msn messenger starting up with windows, you shhouldnt need oem cleanup (this resets settings when you boot so it might actually be causing problems) soundfusion (unless your constantly playing older comp games)loadqm??, ICQ dosn't need to start with windows. If you dont have web tv you dont need tvwakeup at all same with vidsver,I dont know what 'announcments' is but sounds like advertising. Find the interfaces of these programs and find there options uncheck load at start up or load with windows option. The more you have starting up with windows the less resources are available, especially with 98 as even if you close the program that started up the resources (ram) that it took leaked and your system stays degraded.
If there is no program interface available for example 'announcements try unchecking it in msconfig.
Find the windows directory in windows explorer and in it you will find startup folder in start menu/programs if there are shortcuts there delete them.
Finally click start/run and type sfc hit ok, choose fix problems automatically have your w98 cd handy if it finds currupt files. Talk to ya later

spybot search & destroy stops responding
My spybot is "not responding" when I try to download the updates for its detections. I have XP and most of my computers resources at its disposal. Can't figure it out. Works fine when Checking for Problems and all else is smooth sailing..just won't update.

hey Rider, in regards to "My spybot is "not responding" when I try to download the updates for its detections"
I have experienced this sometimes and my guess is that at that same time you are downloading there is a heavy traffic on that particular mirror, go to start/all Programs and start Spybot on advance mode/search for updates/ and choose a different mirror from Australia, Europe or USA and Download Updates again. It should work this time.
