Computer freezes regularly

A friend of mine has a laptop bought in 1999, running Windows 98 with 32 meg RAM. He has very few programs installed - Internet Explorer, Trillian, Lotus Word Pro 97 - aside from the default windows applications. He also has very little data stored on the hard drive. Recently the computer has started freezing between 15-30 minutes after startup. Pressing ctrl-alt-del has no effect and the computer is completely unresponsive so he has to turn it off manually, which means he has to go through the whole scandisk startup, etc. Is it possible that a virus is causing this, or might there be another cause? I should note that running an antivirus doesn't help because the computer freezes before the program gets very far. He's tried disk defrag several times and each time he does the process terminates partway through. Any suggestions?

1) Turn off computer, start it and when you hear the beep continuously tap F8 you will be presented with option choose start in safe mode. In safe mode minimal drivers will be loaded.
2) While in safe mode run your up to date virus scan, Then run scan disc, then run disc cleanup, then run defragmenter.Do it in that order. Then click start and run type sfc this is system file checker choose fix automatically click start and it will find changed.deleted and currupt files that you may need w98 instalation disc to reinstall.
3)restart computer.
4)If there are any icons beside the clock EXCEPT for virus scanner open the program and find its options uncheck load at windows starup or words to that effect to stop it from starting up with windows.
Go to start/programs/accessories and windows explorer expand the + sign beside windows drectory in start menu you will see 'start up' delete any shortcuts in there.
5) BUY MORE RAM 126mg total minimum.
6) make sure fan is spinning inside the box.

Main problem is ram and start up program.

6) click start/run and type msconfig go to startup tab.
Write down everything that is checked. DO NOT whoever tells you to on any board change anything right now. Post what is in there in this thread and we'll go thru it for any updaters etc that may also be running.
