MSN Messenger vs. Windows Messenger in XP

So, after getting a new computer with Windows XP, I downloaded and installed MSN messenger 6, but windows messenger still runs, meaning after I sign into messenger, it signs out of that and into Windows Messenger. So I have to re-sign in, which is highly annoying. I've tried changing options on the program access thingy on add/removep rograms, but it still keeps coming. I didn't really want to find the actual program and delete it, partly because i'd rather do it mro cleanly, and partly because there's so much crap to look through and I couldn't muster up the effort.
Any help would be moderately appreciated. Oh, uh... much appreciated.

MSN Messenger vs Windows Messenger – Stop the Sign In Fight!
Ever wanted to use only the latest MSN Messenger and wish Windows Messenger would just go disappear forever, but you need it for remote assistance and don’t want to remove it?
You want to stop the automatic sign-in fight between the two programs and would just rather automatically sign-in with the latest MSN Messenger without a message saying "Your .net passport has been signed out because it has been signed in at another location"? (Caused by XP signing into your .net passport with Windows Messenger even while Windows Messenger is closed)
Here’s how to Stop the Sign In Fight! ………
1) Go to Windows Messenger- TOOLS/OPTIONS/ACCOUNTS/ and click to Sign-In with ‘Communications Service’ instead of ‘.Net passport' - This will stop XP using your .Net passport with Windows Messenger by default and causing a background sign-in fight.
2) Finish it all off by hiding Windows Messenger and all its shortcuts by going to START/ALL PROGRAMS/PROGRAM ACCESS AND DEFAULTS (XP+SP1 only) - choose ‘Custom’ and un-tick "Enable access to this program" next to Windows Messenger.
If you have your MSN Messenger set to automatically sign in then you will never have a problem with that damn .Net passport message or sign-in fight again!!!
Windows XP and MSN Messenger will still need to use Windows Messenger from time to time. It is important to understand that MSN Messenger for XP gets its remote assistance capabilities from Windows Messenger, which means that Windows Messenger MUST NOT be removed, and if it is, remote assistance will not work.
You may notice that 2 instances of the messenger program maybe appearing in you notification area while these features are accessed or if Microsoft Outlook is configured to ‘Enable Instant Messaging’ in TOOLS/OPTIONS/OTHER. This is normal and what I suggest to prevent this from happening it is - Right click on your START button, go to PROPERTIES/TASKBAR/CUSTOMIZE - Find Windows Messenger and 'Always Hide' it so when it is in use you wont see it.
Hope this all helps.

Hi,
I noticed that when using video conferencing, MSN Messenger has a much lower frame rate that Windows Messenger. Is that because I didn't configure MSN Messenger correctly?
Any help will be much appreciated

I was told that MSN messenger is intended only for users with operating systems other than XP and Windows Messenger is actually better (with add-in from Microsoft)

Feel like I got slammed. I have been using Windows Messenger with my Net Password and very content with it. Yesterday I tried to sign on and was rejected, and informed I needed to sign up for Net Passport. Then noticed that MSN Messenger comes up when ever I try to go to Windows Messenger. My computer does auto updates, but I have not done anything to download MSN Mess. How do I get it back

This problem has been driving me nuts and I think I have finally solved it. It is a multiple part problem on my computer:
1. You cannot have Windows Messenger and MSN Messenger running at the same time. Therefore, you need to start Windows Messenger and insure the auto start options are off.
2. If you are running Norton AntiVirus, there is an option to protect instant messengers. If the option to protect Windows Messenger is checked, Norton will start a copy of Windows Messanger and the problem will still be there. I had to uncheck this option.
With 1) and 2) above, the "... signed in to messenger at another computer" should no longer occur.
3. However, there is another problem that can confuse. When you exit MSN Messenger, there seems to be a delay in the sign-out process at MSN. Therefore, if you sign-in again to quickly, you may not get an auto sign-in. You can easily overcome this by clicking the MSN Messenger icon and clicking sign-in. I don't like to do this, so what I now do is exit MSN Messenger and then wait about 30 seconds before I restart my Windows XP. I'm not sure how much time is really needed, but 30 seconds seems to work.
