I/O error

My computer crashed and I had to start all over again using recovery disks and reinstalling compuserve etc. I downloaded zone alarm and tried to install it and I keep getting the following error: :an I/o error occurred while installing a file. This is normally caused b a bad installation media or a corrupt installation file." Well, I have no clue what this means and am about to pull my hair out. If you can, please help.

thank you
susan

What I would do is delete the Zone Alarm file you downloaded and then download it again. Make sure you do not have any Windows programs running when you do the install. Also, sometimes you need to dis-able your anti virus software while doing an install, then turn it back on after installation.

Hi Jay,

Thanks for trying to help. I've deleted Zone Alarm and downloaded it several times and I still keep getting the same error. I found out I get when I download anything! I did dis-able the anti-virus after you suggested it, but still get that message.

I appreciate your trying to help. Have a good day..

I/O error Morpheus 1.9.1
Getting same message an "I/O error occurred while installing a file. This is normally caused by bad installation media or corrupt installation file." After I try and install Morpheus 1.9.1.
The splash screen comes up and after I click install that's when I get the above message. I do have Zonealarm 3.0 installed but disabled that and everything in systray, even closed all non critical processes in task manager, downloaded Morpheus 1.9.1 from another site, Recently (before this happened) clean install Windows XP Pro have all updates P4 512meg Geforce3, Audigy Gamer, 120 & 40gig hard drives.
Any ideas would be appreaciated. I'm going go find an older version of morpheus and see if that works.

An I/O error occurred while installing a file.
I recently uninstalled Yahoo Messenger because I was having a minor problem with it and when I tried to re-install it, I got the "I/O error" I deleted the Yahoo Folder, closed all open programs, and I still get it. I am, however, able to install the previous 5.0 version of Yahoo Messenger. But, I want the 5.5 version back. Please help me! Thank you.

guys ive been getting the same error on my machine, under windows xp, ive got an thunderbird 1.2Ghz and everytime i install a new game half way through the error comes up..

but ive found a way round this especially with games is to copy all the files from the CD onto your hard disk if u have the space and install it from there no problems

Ive been trying to solve this and i think its a motherboard compatability issue with windows xp, something to do with ACPI ive got a chaintech AJAI0 motherboard, email me if u have a similar setup.

I hope this works out guys

if these are files that you got thru p2p programs like kazaa or morpheus don't be surprised if they won't install as all the files are probably not there to install it. The person may have done something like pay for it so why would he let you just take it.
In addition almost all virus and trojan writers target kazza and morpheus usures as these users are usually newbies and uninformed enough to have installed spyware on their systems so the writers have a better chance of using this computer with little trouble.
If you were to uninstall your spyware and clean your systems with adaware or spybot search and destroy, run an updated virus scan you'll find you own your computers again.

well, maybe its a bad cd or currupted instalation file. Bring the cd back to the store to see if it can be installed in their machine, if you downloaded it, download it again from a different site.

Hey Everybody, I have tried installing macromedia software, Hitman 2 silent assassin, counter-strike, Hlaf-Life, zone alarm pro, and many other sofware, and yet I still get this damn I/O error telling me that I have corrupted installation media. It is seriously pissing me off. I have a Gigabyte motherboard that was designed for Windows XP so it can't possibly be a motherboard compatability issue. I just got a new 80 gig hard drive, so that is not the problem. I disabled Norton anti virus, but I still get the error when installing. This is so annoying! If anyone has an idead of what file or files may be causing a conflict of some sort with the windows installer, then could you please e-mail me telling me how to fix this. Or if there is any other type of solution to this irritating problem, please let me know asap. I am considering going to Linux...

I've had th pb myself, and i think it's due to some kind of virus, because after format an creating a new partition, i didn't get the problem anymore.
However, i think formatting and getting a new partition table IS the only way out;
Carefull, don't save installation files and load it afterwhile, because it's what i did, and the virus appears to get in all of the install files, so i got it back.
If someone has got some other idea, pliz tell

I am getting the error too, "I/O Error, Bad INstallation media or corrupt installation file" while trying to install counter-strike on my new pc. I did a zero fill on the 60gb maxtor hd last night, reinstalled Windows 2000 Pro, installed all mobo drivers, nvidia drivers, audio etc. I have installed Quake3 and Tony Hawk 3 with no problem. CS will not install, seems to stop on a different file in installation process each time, which is weird. Ive tried using my dvd drive to install, my cd drove, even my cd burner. None work. I tried mounting an image with Alcohol, still didnt work.

Also, I decided to try installing Half-Life and using mod version of CS. However, HL installs ok, then it wont run. I get an error. Something like "Kb_keys.lst is missing" Game wont even run.

PLEASE HELP ME!!! I love CS, I need to play it, help help help please

This is annoying. I downloaded a 120 MB file (Battlefield 1942 Demo) on my poor dial-up conection and I got the same I/0 error! I then downloaded the SuperConducotr Demo and then I got another I/0 error.

I believe it's a problem with Wise Solutions installation. Both .EXE file with the I/0 error corruption use Wise installation.

It'd be swell if someone could help us!

My OS: Windows XP
RAM: 256 mb
Graphics: Geforce 2 MX 100/200
Processor: AMD Duron 1 Gighurt

Thanks

Hello Guys,

I've got the same problem under XP.
It was impossible for me to install XP SP1, any games or a unzip a big archive file.

I changed my memory with a new one and everything works fine now.

I think problem should come from memory which has a bug with internal instructions.

What in the blue hell are these follow ups! i mean, lots of you guys are newbies and you ask the questions and all the replies are absolutely foolish.. 'coz they are given by newbies again.. please if you are a newbie dont post a reply.

Now for the best solution to these kinda problems, there is one final solution...
Go to google.com and search for unwise.exe (Wise installer executables) and the unpacker for install shield.. there are lots of sites that offer those tools. And unpack the executables and you will have all those files required.

Have got any doubts,, mail me for details.
And .. lemme clear you of the myth,, its not the antivirus software / the ram..

J
justjay@k.st
06/05/03
Sorry, i guess i said.. unwise.exe in my previous post, the unpacker is exwise.exe and the site where you can get these tools is www.cracktools.pl

Cheers

Found out the answer - at least on my machine - Running Win2000 Professional -

The temp directory did not have the correct "Write Permissions" setup, preventing the program from being able to write to the temp directory. Right click on the directory and select Properties. Next Add your current user to the list. Be sure to select Full Control to that user. Select Ok and reboot - worked fine after that!

I would assume that this would work for WinXP also - but cannot try it.

Howdy people,

I have still got this problem when trying to install Unreal2, UT2003, RtCW and many other new games. I have recently installed WinXP Pro, bought new memory, wrote zeros (again) to the HD, yet the problem still occurs.

I know its definitely not a memory problem because I took out the original 256mb stick, put in the brand new one (apacer) and tried to install the games. Still got the I/O error.
So i've now got 512megs of pc2700 ddr ram in here.

I know FOR SURE that the cd's aren't the problem. I know for sure that the hard drive isnt the problem, because i had this seagate in my other pc and it worked perfectly.

I am thinking now it might be a problem with motherboard. I have a Gigabyte GA-7VA-C

Oh, and it has nothing to do with the Wise installer, because i am having this problem with many games that use installshield. I think it is a hardware problem.

Jay Culshaw
jayculshaw@hotmail.com

i dont think its ram, or hard drive because its simply affecting too many people for it to be a hardware problem, so i think its a settings/software issue. i found a site which seems to accuse NAV, and as programs like nero have caused me murder in the past i dont think this is too far off.
try
http://www.erieri.co.uk/TechSupport/NewTechFaq/FAQ_Error_Message_6.htm

good luck

Tim

06/17/03
Well for me, Norton has nothing to do with the problem, as the first time i got the error, NAV wasn't even installed yet.

I am now getting CRC errors with all the games. (strangely, since installing Windows XP Pro, Counter-Strike installed fine) but all other games, I get a CRC error. There is nothing wrong with the CDs. I strongly suspect it is a hardware problem (RAM, or motherboard itself) because I tried writing zeros to my maxtor HD, which COMPLETELY erases everything. I then installed Win2k and installed SP3, got the updates from net, and the problems still occured.

So, I think it has absolutely nothing to do with software. Hardware seems to be the cause, but it's not my HD or CD drives as they are fine with my other PC.

I bought a new 256mg stick of pc2700 ram, and replaced the original, still get problem - so either both the sticks are bad (very unlikely) or the motherboard is bad.

i also have the same problem. i have no problem with cs itself but i get the error when i unzip the patch and can't see it being hardware considering all of us have the same problem.come on computer geeks what's the answer to this, it will be a good challenge.
Only if you know for sure what the answer is don't bother emailing. I need my cs.

Hi again people. Well, I've found a workaround for my little (big) problem. I decided i might as well try booting into Safe Mode and installing a game in there, then going back into normal windows boot to play and hey presto, it works!! So for now, at least i can install and play all my games. Will have to find that problem later on when i can be bothered.

Hopefully doing it this way will work for some of you guys also. Good luck :)

ok it cant be the motherboard cause i had the same problem on the old pc and now i have a new and a new CPU,the problem is really strange because the problem occures from time to time sometimes it works and sometimes not ,i really hate this sucking problem
i found out that when i change my graphiccard the problem occurres not so often ,i know its really strange but try it and you will see
i'm very fustrated,i cant install any of the new games ,

Hi... I recently built my new computer and I'm having similar problems. Here are the specs for my comp:

P4 2.4CGhz (800Mhz FSB)
1024MB DDR400 PC32000 RAM
Western Digital 80GB 72000 RPM Special EditionHD
ATI Radeon 9700 128MB
Abit IS7-E motherboard
LiteOn CDRW 52x24x52x
Samsung Floppy Drive
Windows 2000 Prof

But anyways, when I install lots of things I get CRC errors telling me the media is corrupt or the installation file is corrupt... but they work on my other system so it makes no sense. When I install half-life, it doesn't copy all the files because i know the size it should be but it's less. It won't open and gives me an error saying "Keyboard Bindings file kb_keys.lst is empty." Also, when I try to patch it with the new Half Life Patch i get an error that says "An I/O error occured while installing a file." And it quits the installation of the patch. I've tried switching EVERYTHING. I tried my friends RAM, I bought a new HD and tried that, I bought a new motherboard and tried that, I swapped the CDRW for my old CDROM and I STILL get the same problem. I don't understand why this happens. Has anyone found any solution because all the websites that have FAQs on the kb_keys.lst problem say it's insufficient HD space, but I have 75 gigs left! Someone heeelp!

Hi there, I had the same problems as most of you people here, but after almost five hours of tinkering, I have have found a solution that may be useful for the majority of you:

open control panel > performance and maintennace > system > hardware > device manager ; now goto the entry for : ide ata/atapi controllers and open it, then open the 'primary ide channel' entry and click on the advanced settings tab and change the transfer mode of both devices to PIO only instead of DMA (this is whats causing the I/O error) and do likewise for the 'secondary ide channel' and after that you should be able to install games and updates properly.

I hope this helps the majority of people here

By the way, I forgot to add that this is the method for fixing the problem with windows xp but it should be the same for the previous versions of windows

I HAVE A SOLUTION I THINK

Hey guys I had the same problem with Counter Strike and all I did was click retry over and over and it eventually worked. I saw someone else suggest doing that on this page, so I think that is a working solution.

Its probably some Windows installer glitch, since all these problems have nothing to do with each other besides windows and installing.

Killer_AJ

Henry Cordy

09/08/03
Right. This will hopefully solve problems for people who can't install half-life even though they have plenty of memory. It might help you I/O people as well. Just figured this out and it worked so...

Go to Control Panel
Go to System
Click Performance tab
On Virtual Memory select "Let windows manage my virtual memory"
On graphics set Hardware Acceleration to None (you can always change this back when you've installed what you're trying to install)
Select OK to get out of this area and you'll probably need to do a reboot.
Now try and install whatecver it was you were trying to do!

If this works someone please call me a god! This is my first ever post so I hope it does.

I use xp and this was happening to me to but I done this. When the I/O error came up I had to abort(couldnt do anything else anyway)But when I went loaded up half life selected custom games refreshed the list it said counterstrike was installed so I clicked activate and the counterstrike came up went to update servers got a list of servers and joined 1 it started downloading cs files from the server but took hours so I ended up stopping it then from the desktop(the screen you get when you switch your comp on ie my computer,my documents etc etc OK most of you know what desktop is but for the sake of some who may not i thought Id better explain it a bit more)I clicked start then up to my computer(the 1 on the menu that appears not the 1 on the desktop)right clicked it,choose manage from the list a new window will appear(it will be called computer management)on the left pane at the bottom click the + on services and applications to expand it click services from the options that appear after you have expanded it a list will appear on the right pane find windows installer right click it select properties a new window will appear at the bottom haf of the window it will say service status click start it will start the windows installer then try to install the cs patch. It worked for me I dont know if it was the joining a server(I left it to download the files from the server for a few hours the same way it downloads the maps from server if you dont have it)or if it was because I started the windows installer. But I do know it works now. Or you could download steam which your gonna have to 1 day you will probally get the same I/O error but to get round this try downloading the ricochet version(for some reason this was the only 1 that wanted to install on ma comp)install it then use steam to update cs(dont download it yourself let it do it)it will take a good few hours mine did and I have adsl(set it to update when you go to bed so you wake up to counterstrike in the morning)and there you go you follow these instructions and you should be playing the nets most popular and best game.any probs drop me a line on my email.

i've had this problem for the past few days trying to reinstall the half life 1110.exe update on my comp, did the same thing with the cs retail 1.5 update too i'd tried everything, several formats/reinstalls, messed with fdisk etc, changed ram and just about every setting i could think off and nothing posted here seemed to work, but anyways just now i just deleted everything it would let me from the windows/temp folder and its seemingly all fine now.. hopefully this may help solve the problem for you people too.

OK i got it solved for the Counter-Strike ppl...had the some prob used to stop on 97%...

1)Download SteamInstall_CS.exe
2)Download SteamInstall.exe
3)Install SteamInstall_CS.exe for example to C:\Steam2
4)Go to that folder (Steam2) and see if u can find there counter-strike.gfc and other files with *.gfc
5)If so then its just like my prob and can be solved
6)Now Install SteamInstall.exe INTO the same folder
7)Start Steam and let it update
8)When ready dont go into CS...double click Half-Life and click on install (it wont take long cause u allready have the *gfc file...but the prob was that the install didnt finish...)
9)Let Steam download the rest of the files and install Half-Life
10)Try to play CS now...
11)Works?
12)Np. :)

This is an indication of a corrupt install. Try these steps to get a clean
installation and disable possible conflicts with the install program.

Half-Life requires that there is at least 400 MB free on the destination
installation drive before installing the game.

1. Uninstall the game and remove extra game files.
2. Run SCANDISK and DEFRAG.
3. End tasks in the background in Windows.
4. Reinstall Half-Life.
5. If problems persist, check the CD-ROM settings and optimize the drive.

1. Uninstall the game from Start, programs menu, or from Add/Remove programs in
Control panel.
- manually delete c:\sierra\half-life folder
- restart your computer
- close all background programs follow these instructions:
1. Make sure you have all programs closed(nothing on your taskbar)
2. While holding down both the Ctrl and Alt key, press delete on your keyboard
3. You should get a "Close Program" window
4. Left-Click on name, and hit the "End Task" button
5. Make sure that you do this for every entry with the exception of "Explorer"
and "Systray", those two files are required for any program to run under
windows.
6. When you have only "Explorer" and "Systray" left in the window it means you
have closed all background programs.
7. Note that when you restart your computer and programs will open again, and
you will have to repeat the process.

- reinstall Half-Life
- apply the latest 1.1.1.0 update

2. Restert your computer. Upon returning to Windows run a thorough Scandisk and
Disk Defragmenter on all hard drives. These utilities can be accessed from
Start - Programs - Accessories and then System Tools.

3. Also make sure there are no other programs running in the background. To
make sure there are no other programs running:
-Hold down the CTRL and ALT keys and press the DEL key. This will bring up a
Close Program Box. The Close Program Box will show the currently running
programs.
-Only Explorer and Systray should be listed when the game is started. If there
are other programs in the task list highlight one of them and click on the End
Task button.
-Repeat steps 1 and 2 until the only programs listed in the Close Program Box
are the Explorer and Systray. NOTE: Some programs cannot be shut down using
these steps. You will need to shut down those programs according to the
instructions specific to those programs.

4. Once the Explorer and Systray are the only programs in the Close Program Box
start the install for Half-Life.

5. If problems persist this may be due to files being mis-read or corrupted
during transfer from the CD to the hard drive. This can be caused by several
problems that effect the ability of the CD-ROM drive to read the application CD.

First, check the CD for fingerprints, dust, scratches or any obvious flaws. If
necessary, clean the CD with a soft non-abrasive cloth, wiping from the center
ring toward the outer edge.

Next, make sure that your CD-ROM drive is using 32-bit protected mode drivers,
not 16-bit legacy drivers from DOS or Windows 3.1. 16-bit drivers will not be
able to stream large amounts of data in Windows '95/98 without faltering. To
determine whether your set-up is optimal, hold down the ALT key and double-click
on the MY COMPUTER icon. A System Properties window will pop-up. Click on the
PERFORMANCE tab. Under Performance status it should say, "Your system is
configured for optimal performance." If not, you may be using outdated drivers
that will undermine the performance of your system.

If you are using real-mode drivers you may be able to use Windows '95/98's add
hardware feature to install the correct driver. Click on Start, then Settings
and Control Panel. Go to Add New Hardware and let Windows detect the hardware.
It may ask for the Windows '95/98 CD-ROM to load the correct drivers. If
Windows '95/98 is not able to detect your CD-ROM, you should contact your system
manufacturer and have them walk you through the process of installing protected
mode drivers. The general performance of your entire system will be improved.

If the system is optimally configured, make sure that the CD-ROM cache is set-up
correctly. Still under Performance, click on the File System button, and then
the CD-ROM tab. There are two settings here. The "Optimize access pattern
for:" should reflect the speed of your CD-ROM, typically, Quad-speed or higher
on current systems. The "Supplemental cache size:" will usually work best if
set to Small. If the cache is not optimal you may have read errors,
skipping/looping sound or static.

Also, there is a setting that can cause various read errors/locks when accessing
a CD. To shut off this feature go to Start, then Settings and click on Control
Panel. Locate the System Icon and double-click on it. When the System
Properties window comes up click on the tab labeled Device Manager and locate
the listing for CD-ROM. Click the plus (+) next to the listing and then
double-click the listing that appears below CD-ROM. On this window click the
Settings tab and locate a listing for DMA under the Options section. Uncheck
the box next to DMA and then click Okay. Then click Close on System properties
and choose Yes to Restarting the System. Then go through the above steps again
to perform clean installation.

justjay@k.st I seen your reply you say if you are a newbie dont reply well you are wrong if more people reply then people can start looking for a pattern to see if we can figure out what is wrong you say it is not the anti-virus or ram. Well I think you are wrong the chances are you are someone who has owned a comp for a few years at the most and think you know the answer to all probs thats probally why your web address to cracktools doesnt exist I think if you read the other posts you can see a pattern of bad ram. that was my problem and its probally everyone elses problem. Now justjay@k.st you will probally leave4 a reply here telling me about how many degrees or stuff like that you have for computing. So the best thing newbies can do is tell us about there probs but dont give us useless answers or links that dont work

A tip to everyone who still got the problem! Run a Memtest86 to check your RAM. I did one today and found 28 errors in 6 hours. Looks like its time to get some new memory.

Hi every1

I have the same I/O problem. I have question. Who has NTFS and I/O problem???

I thinking about that NTFS is a problem OR something in hardware. I have PII400 with 192MB RAM and i don't have this problem. but my friend has ATH2400+ with 512MB and he has it. RAM test gave mi nothing because RAM has no errors (7h test).

So what do you think? Its could be NTFS?

okay i had this same problem when updating counter-strike 1.5 to 1.6 with steam. i would get the "an i/o error has occured..", at first i tried doing what was mentioned here by the ways of scan disk, virus check, defrag and ram changing. didnt help still had that problem. well i figured i'd check out what the error really ment or what its suppose to mean. well it said that its a corrupted file from either a bad transfer or a virus. so i downloaded a different version of the update i got. at first i tried to download the update steaminstall_cs (379mb)twice, which didnt work, after which i downloaded and installed steaminstall_full (723mb) and it worked perfect no problems. so i guess you just have to try downloading the same file or try other versions of it till you get a good copy of it.

I was thinking, i have the same problem with a Colin McRae rally demo, using Wise Installtion exe. It gets a good way through the installtion, but then stops when it detects a bmp file is corrupt. I dont give a crap about the bmp file, and it would probably run the game fine without it, but it doesn't let you continue with the installtion and get the rest of the files. Is there anyway to extract all of the files, ignoring any corruption, from a Wise installtion exe? Thx...

I have had this problem too, it was my memory. If you have this problem it is your harddrive, memory or motherboard. Most likely it is your memory. TRUST ME!
