used a gateway restoration cd, followed by a re-load of windows 98, and lost unprotected microsoft word 2000 files. any way to recover lost files from my home computer?

If you reformated the hard drive before 're loading'(?) then your files are lost.
If you merely installed 98 ontop of the existing windows installation then perhaps pc inspecter file recovery may be of some help (free file!!!) find it here:
