Programs running slow, cant uninstall program

I have a hp pavilion mx 75 with windows xp home version. Recently I had problem with a quickverse program and it caused a "database" error. I thought it was just for that program and I ignored it. Now the everything runs slow. I defragmented, that didnt seem to help. I uninstalled the program and tried to reinstall. That didnt help, in fact I seemed to be "losing" programs, I couldnt access norton, pc doctor. Some things were just not loading. I performed a system restore and I got my norton back, but when I try to uninstall the problem program(quickverse) it says I cant because I'm missing the dll file. I am afraid of a crash and I dont own a rescue cd or boot cd. I also scanned for virus using norton and it appears that I have no viruses. Any help or insight you could give me would be appreciated.

download spybot search and destroy. It sounds to me like you've got spyware running in the background.
You may also have a trojan/worm update your virus definitions and scan.
