System32.exe missing?
Ben

09/17/03
Everytime i start up I get this message:

" windows cannot find C:\WINDOWS\System32\System32.exe. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again. To search for a file, click the Start button, and then click Search. "

Does anyone know what this means? because it seems to be causing all sorts of problems, such as constant freezing on the internet and takes about 3 mins for the desktop to load.

I have windows xp home, 2400 athlon xp with 512 ram and 120 gig hard drive if that's any help to anyone?

as windows doesnt have a file called system 32 exe this is a virus or worm Suggest you do a search (e.g. via google) for "kwbot.c" virus and "system32.exe" and follow the hints/links.
This was spread predominently thru kazaa,by the way, don't bother looking for any files (that this worm/virus) trashed ..coz it ALSO deletes them from your 'Recycle Bin'.

ben and marcus!
i have had the same problem as you, i've spent meaningless hours trying to solve it and thanks to the help of ed i've managed to solve it.
what you have to do is:
1.live update your norton (raccomanded but isn't important...)
2. star your windows on safe mode - press F8 when the computer starts and shows it's stats
(second page the computer shows after restart)
and press safe mode.
3.click start-run-type "regedit" - click ok
open: HKEY_Local_Machine then Software\Microsoft\Windows Nt\CurrentVersion\Winlogon
4. on the right side of the menu box scroll down and find "shell" and double click it.
change the text in the box so it shows
"Explorer.exe"
close all aplications and restart the computer.
press F8 again when the computer shows it's stats only this time chose
"start windows normally"
mission acomplished!
thank me on my email:

Ok, so I had the same problem. I modified the Shell text in in the registry, but now I can't run NAV to do a system scan..I wanna make sure this virus is gone.

Help!

Sharone: you can get a second opinion by using an online scan, like housecall:
http://housecall.trendmicro.com/
this one will also clean

Hey, ok, my problem is a little different because i can't install any games, or some progs either from a CD, the autorun doesn't really do much, and if i open the setup manually it says "Windows cannot find ...(whatever the setup file name is). Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again. To search for file, click Start button, and then click Search" and i can't really install things on my comp, i've got Windows XP Professional ...i dont think u'll need to know anything else...

K. I went through the steps as far as I could, however, running WinXP, I have no NT directory to change the SHELL to Explorer.EXE. Any suggestions?

System32.exe is a probable sign of a virus or trojan

You DON'T know which one.
You should NOT be mucking about until you indentify the virus or trojan.

RUN an online virus scan BEFORE trying to remove things by guesswork.

DON'T GUESS.
RUN A SCAN.
IDENTIFY WHAT IT IS.
THEN look for the appropriate removal instructions.
