When I start my computer, (windows 98), I have at least 20 programs going on my taskbar, and I dont use half of them. How can I get them from coming on everytine I startup. I dont have much memory, so I want to use it for what I want. I know how to shut the programs off each time (ctrl-alt-del)

Help would be very appreciaed, Thanx

In the windows start menu, click on run, type in msconfig.
This has a startup tab, where you can deselect items you dont want loaded at startup.

Hope this is what you wanted.

no dont do that.msconfig's purpose is to disable programs at start up to trouble shoot.
Open the programs that are in the taskbar click file or tools but find their 'options' and in their options you will find words to the effect 'load when windows starts' uncheck this item. Programs will also start if there is a shortcut to them in the 'start up' file in windows, use explorer to delete these shortcuts.
Some items such as media players and volume controls are inserted there by some sound cards and the only way to remove them is thru uninstall. Ceck out Pacs portal for more info.

Still think msconfig is by far the easiest way to stop programs loading at startup.
Its also easy to change if you make a mistake or decide you do want the program to load on startup as you dont have to delete any shortcuts.
Whatever msconfig is designed for, troubleshooting etc, i still find it by far the best way to stop things loading at startup, and also the most reliable.
