my problem is i had a virus/trojan and it infected a few system files which in the cleaning process got deleted, i've seemed to of fixed my computer perfectly except for one file ''shell32.pif'' i need to find a way to get a copy of this file, the current computer i'm on is a HP Pavilion.. which didn't come with backup/recovery/windows CDs so i can't re-install this file, i'm on windows xp by the way. thanks. matt.

yes i do have one, i have a few anti virus programs, but without that file it doesn't really matter what i have because i cannot open any ''.exe'' files until i get another xp ''shell32.pif'' file. so in kind of a crappy spot. thanks. matt..by the way the anti virus stuff shouldn't matter, i already removed the registry entries and infected files for the virus and have re-scanned system is fine now, just need that one file.

How about using system restore to a point before you had a virus?

see the system restore would work, except i can't really run anything except for internet explorer anything else gives me an error ''C:\Windows\System32\Shell32.pif Invalid Program File Name, Please check your pif file.'' when i try to run basically anything even system restore/recovery. Also, the link that you put up yes it has shell32.pif , but that's Windows 95 Cab files, i've tried that pif it's an incompatible version, seems like i'm screw'd i can't open a burning program to back up the things i want to save, and i have about 50 GB used. would hate to lose everything over one file.

I have looked on a computer with XP Pro installed, and also on the installation disc, and cannot find any trace of a shell32.pif file.

yeah i've read that, that's how i removed the virus, but norton when scanning i guess was set on clean automatically n it deleted shell32.pif so i stopped it n finished the rest manually but still couldn't get the file back..thanks.

OMG! where to begin... i recently installed some windows updates from which i have learned that wmp9 and IE6 are the nasty little buggaz that have caused this whole heap of mess... b4 knowing these were the cause i tried to reboot..got to 61% and then the 'suwin error' appeared, given the choices to click 'ignore' or 'cancel' i clicked 'ignore' and nothing! so i closed it all down and when i restarted i was then faced with 'error starting program the 'winspool.drv' is linked to missing export NTDLL.dll:NTQUERYINFORMATIONPROCESS' ...along with 'couldnt load library winspool.drv' and then 'general protection fault module VERX.dll@0002:24AE...arghh..is there much more?? iv given up all hope of rebooting as iv followed a few steps given to other members at an earlier time with no joy...so i now wish to format it..only i cant get into dos without windows loading first..what am i doing wrong?? iv also tried goin thro 'my computer' clicking c drive then in file clicking 'format' and no joy still..it does nothing...im at a total loss,im not too confident with messing around but can follow presice steps...can anyone help a megre female?? ;O)

I must have removed some system files from my computer. I have re-installed windows 98 from my cd but some files were not found, I had to skip these to get the computer working. They seem to control the sound of the machine as I have no sound, no volume control and it keeps telling me that the files are missing. Is there any site where I can download system files as I've been searching for 3 days and am ready to throw the damn thing from the window. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Please don't use 'jargon' in the reply cos I won't understand it, Thanks very much to anyone who can help me
