Hello. I think i have managed to fix my rundll32 problem thanx to all of you, but there is still an even bigger problem i need to take care of. every time i start up my computer, a message comes up saying
"windows encountered an error accesing the system registry. Windows will restart and repair the system registry for you."

This sounds fine, but it doesnt STAY fixed, it has to do thsi EVERY time i start up my computer. I think it may have started right after i installed the latest version of MSN MESSENGER, but Im not sure. Please help me ASAP!!

Dear Reth,

All you have to do is let Windows load with out the error, then insert the Windows CD rom into your CD-Rom drive run Setup wait for Windows to re-install and all should be fine, make sure you run the Windows setup from within Windows, and then when you return to your desktop, everything should be back to normal, and this error should not occur, I can only guess you are running Windwos 95 and this error doesn't happen on any other Windows version.

Best Regards,
David Moses,

Hi,

I have this problem with W98SE. I'm aware of Q186909, but I don't think that is in fact my problem.

Is there any way of forcing Reg Checker to say explicitly what the fault is that it's finding ?

Thanks

Hi,

RE: Registry error after MSN MESSENGER install.
I had the problem and think I found the solution. Using "regedit" check the registry key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\MessengerService\ListCache\.NET Messenger Service

If there is another folder under this path (ie ".NET Messenger Service" is not the last key in path) then you probably need to delete the entire key.

In my registry there was a incorrect entry under ".NET Messenger Service" which could not be deleted (it was named "1").

Error detected using NORTONS 2000 WINDOCTOR registry scan, after many hours testing SDRAM and other componants because of leads I got from MS and internet.

Have fun,
Koss

Windows 98

Firstly, don't click "OK". Try getting rid of the registry checker by Ctrl-Alt Del and 'end task' the registry scanner.

then to get into the registry:

click START, RUN,type "regedit"(without "s), OK

this will bring up the registry editor.

Follow the path outlined above to the problem key (which is a folder).

Be careful about changing the registry as it can cause all sorts of problems with windows. Be sure to back it up first and don't change anything unless you are certain it is the same problem item explained above (ie folder named "1" under HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\MessengerService\ListCache\.NET Messenger Service
).

If in any doubt run Nortons 2000 or another win doctor type programme.

I re-did my whole computer - that mean's getting rid of EVERYTHING - and the first time I ran MSN Messenger I had the 'encountered a registry error' thing again. So, I have no immediate answer for that but I can help you keep your comp. running smoother in the meantime. When Windows 'fixes' things with the registry checker it uses a .cab file located in C:\Windows\Sysbckup - assuming your Windows directory is C:\Windows of course, and, if a .cab file is there. When Windows does this it restores your computer to the last backup it has which comes from this .cab file, so, here's what you need to do. Once your computer has booted after the error thing, make sure everything is how you want it, desktop settings or anything and everything, then go to that directory and delete any .cab files you see. They are usually called something like rbad.cab, rsomething.cab etc. Now, go to Start > Programs > Accessories, System Tools > System Information. IN the window that opens, select Tools > Registry Checker. Once it has run it will tell you that your registry has not been backup up today and ask if you want to do it. Say yes. This creates a new .cab file in Sysbckup. The next time you get the error your comp will load with the way you set up your comp after deleting the old .cab files and running Registry Checker. Now I know this isn't the best since it doesn't fix the problem, but for those who are unsure about repairing their computer at least it gives you the settings you want after an error instead of going back to old stuff all the time. If anyone ever finds out why this message occurrs in the first place, I hope you will post it. As for me, MSN Messenger is no longer part of this system. :-)

i had this problem with the registry checker on boot up and upgraded my power supply from a 230w to a 400w PSU and now all is fine!!!
Have a look at yours to see if you've got enough power for all of your drives

I a also experiencing the WJV View Error in addition to lots of other weird things going on. I'm beginning to think a virus didn't get caught by Norton and has corrupted my files. Internet Explorer along with many of the links on my Start Bar (ie. Settings, Control panel) do not open. I am able to get on the Internet via My Docs and My Computer - somehow the search bars show up there...must have been the kids. I am likely going to restore, but haven't paid much attention in the recent past creating a good restore point. This feature has saved me several times in the past.
