slow connection on cable

Hi I have a 600k cable connection but I am only getting connections of about 150k? I have spoken to my ISP which is NTL in the UK and they said that there is nothing wrong with their end?! I have a AMD 800Mhz, with 256Mg ram and a 30GIG HDD, using a Terayon TJ210 cable modem.

When you spoke to NTL .. did they mention to you that they were running a transparent proxy? - if they didn't then they should have had their wrist slapped! also, when was the last time that the cable modem was connecting at full speed ?

no they didnt tell me they had a transparent proxy. So i called them back up and yes you were right, they do have 1!! the sods. Apparently it is a 10gig proxy which i have added to my internet connection here, and it has improved slightly, getting about 200-250k now :( still not full speed. last time was about 5 weeks ago i think (maybe less).

hmm... that was when microsoft released their MSn upgrades?? do u have MSN chat by any chance.. if u do, I am aware that there was an issue with MSN effecting WEBdav file extensions. there may be a fix after all... download TCPIP OPTIMIZER .. you can find it in google, small file but very good. when its downloaded, run it, it will tell you what your current download capabilitis are, click on CABLE and then OPTIMIZE this will then show you what is the cable modems potential, click OK and then reboot.. try the connection again, to get an idea of how fast the connection is go here http://us.mcafee.com/root/speedometer.asp and click on SPEED TEST, should find this improves it :))

HOLY COW !! omg how fast !! i am getting speeds around 590k - 600k now.. thanks mike. nice to see that this is the place to go for knowledge.. really appreciate it.
